In August-September, Donate Life America and the Donate Life Store, managed by Boost, hosted the first annual Donate Life Art Contest — prompting participants to illustrate what Donate Life means to them. We received many beautiful, thoughtful and inspirational pieces.
The winning piece was created by Brigette McKern of Tampa, Florida.
“Reflecting on five years post double lung transplant, [for this piece] I wanted to use words that describe what an organ donor has given me.”
Brigette was born with Cystic Fibrosis, a genetic disorder that causes her body to produce excess mucus. Just shy of her 30th birthday she learned that she was in end-stage Cystic Fibrosis and would need a double-lung transplant in order to survive. Brigette was on the national transplant waiting list for 28 months before she finally received "the call”.
"It's hard to put into words what my donor and donor family mean to me... The compassion and selflessness in their decision is something I will never take for granted. I think of them every morning as I wake up and take a deep breath."
